Nandalal has here studied the stance of a female figure, probably a palace attendant. This particular scene depicts the attendant holding an umbrella over Princess Maddi who is leaving for exile with her consort, Prince Vessantara. Rendered in fine, brisk strokes that delineate the graceful undulation of the feminine form, this sketch has been reproduced from part of the mural that depicts the 'Vessantara Jataka' in cave no. 17 of the Ajanta caves.
