Nandalal has here studied a man with a moustache, carrying a long staff with strings at the end. He wears a long striped coat and a conical hat hinting at a Persian influence. The figure's stance suggests that he is in conversation with another person (not depicted). Rendered in fine, brisk pencil strokes, as per the inscription, the sketch has been reproduced from part of a mural from cave no.17 of the Ajanta caves.
