Nandalal preferred drawing from life, often sketching outdoors with the subject being life, nature studies, landscapes, figure drawings and animals. He also had a keen fascination for studying the architectural traits particular to different regions and observed the modifications in them with the change in terrains. In the sketch above, he has studied a column in the verandah of a house, executed in fluid, linear strokes of the pen.
