Nandalal has here created a design which comprises the silhouette of a deer filled with an ornamental floral design. Linear pencil strokes depict the fine contours of the deer and the floral design has been executed in calligraphic lines. Jaya Appasamy elucidates in her essay, 'Nandalal- Master Draughtsman' in the book 'Nandalal Bose (1882-1966) Centenary Exhibition', "His design though based on natural forms was not naturalistic; it followed nature only as a starting point and developed into shapes and patterns imbued with abstract elements such as rhythm, movement, motifs and delicate details. He planned his designs as he would a composition: with attention to structure, on a division of mass and space, symmetry or asymmetry."
