Study of Oriental Art - Sketch Book No. 25 11208 Nandalal Bose Pencil on paper

×
Nandalal has here artistically rendered an illustration or an ornamental design that consists of three lions, that have individual bodies in various stances but a common head. The linear, fluid strokes depict the fine contours of the design and reflect the maturity of the artist. He has also rendered a quick sketch of two tigers fighting as a template above the main composition. Nandalal has elucidated in his book 'On Art', "In any artistic composition it is the line that gives unity and character to each object in the composition, as well as to all the objects taken together....Postures depend chiefly on the bend and movement of the backbone. This can be observed and studied properly if one takes a side view."
