Nandalal has, in this delicate sketch, reproduced a drawing of a grasshopper from Ananda Coomaraswamy's book, 'Indian Drawings', as the inscription suggests. He had a deep admiration for the rich artistic traditions of India and studied past works to enhance his vocabulary.
