In this pencil sketch, Nandalal has depicted a motif with a floral pattern within a circular setting, perhaps an alpana design (Bengali term for rangoli- a floor or wall decoration usually made with rice paste or flower petals). Nandalal often encouraged his students at Santiniketan to participate in alpana making as he felt it was a collective participatory ritual that brought them together.
