Nandalal had a strong affinity for sketching, his subjects being the surrounding environs, people in their everyday life or anything that he found fascinating. In this painting, he has depicted a young tribal woman Sabari (referring to the character from epic Ramayana) climbed on a tree. Rendered with the use of colours in tonal variation, delineating the contours of the figure and adding depth to the composition.
