Nandalal preferred drawing from life, often sketching outdoors with the subject being life, nature studies, landscapes, figure drawings, animals. Often the sketches were small in scale although invigorating with the rich detailing of the artist's observations, experiences and sojourns to various places. In this postcard, the artist represents a man sleeping under a gnarled tree. This painting by Nandalal has been rendered in the monochromatic style, emphasising on its tonal variations. He has painted in deep tints of black, the distinctive shape of the tree in the background, and a range of strokes in tonal variations capturing the rhythm and pattern in the image.
