    Nandalal Bose

Sabari in her middle age, 1941 4990 Nandalal Bose Tempera on paper

Nandalal had a strong affinity for sketching, his subjects being the surrounding environs, people in their everyday life or anything that he found fascinating. In this painting, he has depicted a tribal woman Sabari (referring to the character from epic Ramayana) making the fruit baskets from leaves. Rendered with the use of colours in tonal variation, delineating the contours of the figure and adding depth to the composition.
