Nandalal preferred drawing from life, often sketching outdoors with the subject being life, nature studies, landscapes, figure drawings, animals and birds or anything that he found fascinating. This sketch is a rendition of a woman as she suckles her child. The composition is rendered in dark pencil strokes filled with coloured pastels, bringing out the corporeality of the forms and suggesting their stance.
