This floral and geometric border pattern has been reproduced by Nandalal in this sketch in order to study indigenous traditions and practices in decorative art. He often made records of the ornamental carvings on historical buildings as the artist had a deep appreciation for the rich sculptural and architectural productions of medieval India and frequently incorporated elements from them into his works.
